Certification Programs

Lifeguard Certification
Participants must be 15 or older on the last day of their course. Please reach out to Samantha Smith at sasmith@largo.com with any questions regarding the course. The course fee is nonrefundable.

UPCOMING CLASSES:
Spring Break Class-
Dates: March 11th, 12th, and 13th

Time: 8:30a - 3:30p; Class times are based on the maximum number of students in the class, class may end earlier in cases where the class is not full and all content for the day has been covered.
Cost: $100 (Participants must have or purchase a Largo Recreation Card at time of registration.)
Weekend Classes-
Dates: April 5th, 6th, and 7th

Time: Friday 3:30p -7:30p, Saturday 8:30a -4:30p, Sunday 8:30a -4:30p; Class times are based on the maximum number of students in the class, class may end earlier in cases where the class is not full and all content for the day has been covered.
Cost: $100 (Participants must have or purchase a Largo Recreation Card at time of registration.)

Course Information:

The Lifeguard Course is a blend of online and in person learning to give participant the necessary skills and certification to work as a lifeguard in the aquatic environment. This course includes 8 hours of online work, followed by a 3 day in-person training that will consist of both classroom and in water learning. The training is taught by a certified Red Cross instructor and upon successful completion participants will receive a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification that is good for 2 years after the course. Please see the upcoming classes listed below.

On day one of the course participants will need to pass the below prerequisites.

Lifeguard Course Prerequisites 

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. 
    • Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.  
    • Swim goggles may be used. 
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. 
    • Candidates must place their hands under the armpits. 
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. 
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.  
    • The face may be in or out of the water. 
    • Swim goggles are not allowed. 
    • Surface dive, feet-first, or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. 
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point. 
      • Both hands must be holding the object.
      • Participant must keep their face at or near the surface, so they are able to get a breath.
      • Candidates should not swim the distance under water. 
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
